Trim Castle (or King John’s Castle) is Ireland’s largest Norman castle. It was built in the late 12th century following the Norman invasion of Ireland. Trim and the surrounding lands were granted to Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath, a Norman baron. Richard II of England stayed there before being ousted from power

Trim Castle (IrishCaisleán Bhaile Átha Troim) is a castle on the south bank of the River Boyne in Trim, County Meath, Ireland. With an area of 30,000 m², it is a castle in Ireland.[1][2] Over a period of 30 years, it was built by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter as the caput of the Lordship of Meath. The Irish Government currently own and are in charge of the care of the castle, through the state agency The Office of Public Works (OPW).

The castle is on the List of National Monuments in County Meath.

Meath was home to the ancient High Kings of Ireland. According to Navan History, it is in Meath that some of the earliest traces of pre-historic man in Ireland were found – flints of a hunter from the Mesolithic era uncovered near Randlestown, near Meath’s county town of Navan, from 9,500 BC

The 1980 movie The Big Red One, starring Lee Marvin and Mark Hamill, was also partially shot in Trim and in particular at Trim Castle.

The castle is noted for the part it played in the filming of the Mel Gibson-directed film Braveheart. The castle was presented as the walled town of York; scenes that took place in London were also filmed here.[13]
